The note was waiting for her in her bedchamber. After Nicholas had left, she had gone directly upstairs to change for dinner. She and Sophia were to dine early with Phillip and then would proceed to a ball at Lord and Lady Middleton’s home.

She pulled off her kid gloves and went to place them on her dressing table when she saw the note. She picked it up. The handwriting was unfamiliar. Puzzled, she opened the sheet.

The message was short, the handwriting crude. You were

at Thérèse’s. Do not interfere.

She stared at it for a moment, and then dread slowly washed over her.

Someone had recognised her, despite her mask. Someone knew she had gone there for a purpose other than gambling.

But who? Thérèse, Robert and Nicholas, of course. And André and Hayes. But Hayes had been there only a year and had never met Thomas. André had been with Thérèse for as long as she could remember and had always been nothing but discreet.

She could not imagine that Thérèse or Robert would mention her visit. Or Nicholas, despite his threats to reveal her whereabouts to Sophia.

Or that any one of them knew something about Thomas’s death they did not want her to learn.

She sank down on her bed, her legs trembling. The note was clearly an effort to frighten her or warn her, or both. Someone did not want her asking questions.

And it was unlikely the sender of the note would be any more pleased if Nicholas started asking questions. She had already been assaulted, and there had been the highwaymen. What if the note writer decided to progress beyond threats on paper?

Which meant she must explain to Nicholas as soon as possible why she could not accept his help.

Without removing her bonnet or spencer, she sat down at the small writing desk and pulled out a sheet of paper.
